Meritocracy is a term used to describe using one’s merit, or competence, as the basis for advancement within an organization. The hiring and promotion processes for employees in a meritocracy are based on their merits rather than other factors such as a person’s family members, race, or gender. The opposite of meritocracy is nepotism.
