Non-sufficient Funds (NSF)

A Non-sufficient Funds (NSF) check is a check that is written for an amount more significant than the funds available in the account, resulting in those funds being unavailable to cover the funds of the check. The bank will then return the NSF check to the customer for a new one or payment made out to cash, which is done as part of a process known as a returned deposit item (RDI).
