The workload is the total of work done by a program in a given time, expressed either as the number of jobs completed or as an average amount of work done within some time frame. May average workload over a period shorter than the length of time that the workload takes place, such as when calculating an average response time to determine whether a device is overloaded. The workload is a characteristic of the environment in which a program runs.
